RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A judge overseeing the criminal case against John Edwards has accepted a brief filed by a government watchdog group supporting the former presidential candidate’s position that he didn’t violate federal campaign finance laws.
U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Eagles signed an order Monday giving Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington permission to file an amicus brief on Edwards’ behalf.
CREW executive director Melanie Sloan has said the government’s case against Edwards is rooted in an extreme interpretation of campaign finance law that would theoretically criminalize nearly any expenditure by candidates.
